Decades of experimentation. Homes people live in. Commercial walls. And a new chapter in Panama City.
Our introduction to 3D concrete printing follows the journey from early research to residential and commercial projects—including Walmart’s Athens store addition, Marco Design’s Palm Beach Gardens project, and the planned Millville cottages.

Would you live in a house built by a robot? What sounds futuristic has been decades in the making.
In the 1990s, pioneers like Dr. Behrokh Khoshnevis began exploring how 3D printing could build structures. Getting there meant developing materials, machines, and construction methods that could work together beyond the laboratory.
By 2018, ICON and New Story had unveiled a permitted 3D-printed home in Austin, Texas. Three years later, residents received the keys to the first Project Milestone home in the Netherlands. These walls were becoming part of everyday life.
Then came neighborhoods. In 2022, ICON and Lennar announced construction underway on a 100-home community in Texas.
And it goes beyond housing. Walmart has used 3D concrete printing for store expansion walls. Alquist’s 8,000-square-foot addition in Athens, Tennessee, serves online pickup and delivery.
In Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Marco Design brought the technology to a 7,500-square-foot residential project. Meet the team behind New Era 3DCP.
Now the story moves to Panama City, where the City Commission voted 5–0 to select Marco Design’s cottage court proposal. 3D-printed cottages are planned for Millville, and we’ll follow the journey.
With greater design freedom and properly engineered concrete walls, 3D printing can help create resilient homes. Wouldn’t it be exciting to live in one? Follow the story at 3DCPToday.com.
